Bill Luckin was such a wonderful person. Always generous, thoughtful, and self-effacing, I found him an infinite source of fun, good sense and constructive advice as we worked together to hold urban history initiatives together in the 1980s and 1990s. His deep, almost gravelly, resonating voice coupled with that distinctive smile which appears in many of the tribute photos are permanent reminders of the man. As a scholar, he put the study of the history of medicine on the intellectual map and was invariably kind and encouraging to younger scholars.
